Mayor Defends Budget Efforts
(Las Vegas, NV) — Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman is defending efforts to help the city weather budget cuts forced by the recession. Goodman, who his winding up his term, says city officials have made “great strides” to deal with lower tax revenues.
He praised workers who agreed to pay and benefit reductions, even though the city has had to cut about 100-million dollars in spending over the past several years. About 600 city jobs have been eliminated through layoffs or not filling vacant posts, but City Manager Betsy Fretwell says no other layoffs are planned right now.
