Regents Reject College Closure
(Carson City, NV) — A plan to close some of Nevada’s colleges has been rejected. The Board of Regents have refused to consider a plan that would have merged or eliminated the Nevada State College in Henderson, the Desert Research Institute at UNLV, and two northern Nevada community colleges.
The state’s higher education system still faces major cutbacks in both programs and jobs, if lawmakers approve Governor Brian Sandoval’s plan to cut funding over the next two years.
Last week, UNLV President Neil Smatresk announced plans to eliminate nearly three dozen degree programs and more than 300 jobs.
