The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels continued their late-season surge with a 78-58 win over the Utah Utes in Salt Lake City on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams . The Rebels (23-7 overall, 11-5 Mountain West Conference) jumped out to a 19-6 lead early on against the overmatched Utes (13-17, 6-10) and never looked back. UNLV led 47-22 at halftime and Utah failed to make a significant run in the second half.
The Rebels maintained the hot-shooting that has marked their winning streak, making over 49% from the floor and 67% (8-of-12) from three-point range. Tre’Von Willis, Oscar Bellfield and Quintrell Thomas shared the scoring lead for the well-balanced Rebels with 12 points each. All of Bellfield’s points came from three-point range. UNLV also had 22 assists, led by six from Anthony Marshall and five from Bellfield. Thomas had eight rebounds and Chace Stanback had nine as UNLV outrebounded Utah 47-26.
The win, UNLV’s fifth in a row, clinches the #3 seed for the Runnin’ Rebels in next week’s Mountain West Tournament, behind #1 BYU and #2 San Diego State. The Rebels will play #6 seed Air Force in the quarterfinals Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.
