Metro Police have released the identities of the two officers involved in the shooting of an armed suspect near I-15 and Blue Diamond Road on Thursday. They are 43-year-old William Gibbs and 41-year-old John Leith Jr., both from the department’s traffic bureau. Gibbs has been with Metro since 2002 and Leith since 2003. Both remain on paid administrative leave pending an investigation of the shooting. Police have not yet revealed which of the officers fired the shot that struck the suspect.
Police say one officer fired and struck the suspect, 29-year-old Luis Castro Jr. of Arizona, after Castro shot his girlfriend and opened fire on passing motorists with a shotgun near the freeway off-ramp Thursday afternoon. Castro was treated at UMC then booked on multiple charges, including attempted murder. His girlfriend was critically injured but police say she is expected to survive. No one else was injured in the incident, which police say began as an argument between the couple. The woman got nearby construction workers to flag down the officers for help after she was shot.
