Former UNLV running back Frank “The Tank” Summers has signed with the San Diego Chargers. Summers signed a free agent contract with the Chargers this week after two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. “The Tank” was a fifth round selection of the Steelers in 2009, and played in two games at fullback with one start that year before an injury ended his rookie season. Summers spent last season on the Steelers’ practice squad as the team made it to the Super Bowl.
Summers called the Steelers “a great organization,” but said he was really excited to return to the West Coast and his home state of California. He said joining the Chargers is “a chance at a fresh start” for his career.
Originally from Oakland, Summers was one of the most popular players at UNLV in two seasons with the Rebels (2007-08) after transferring from junior college. He led the team in rushing each season and totaled 1,668 yards while scoring 20 touchdowns.
