Mining Proposal Could Spark New Debate
President Obama’s proposed budget could mean higher taxes for Nevada’s mining industry. The administration’s budget would include royalty fees on silver, gold and copper extracted from federal lands. But it could face an uphill battle in Congress and with members of the state’s congressional delegation.
Senator Harry Reid says he’ll study the mining reform proposal to determine if it, quote, “protects the mining industry, doesn’t kill jobs and shares revenues with the state.” Republican Congressman Dean Heller warned it would be a “mistake” to take action that could cost jobs.
