The abuse of sick leave by Clark County firefighters turned out to be bigger than first thought. According to Assistant County Manager Ed Finger, one out of three county firefighters took excessive sick leave in 2009. The greatest offenders missed several weeks of work at a time by combining vacation, sick days and regular days off. Finger says e-mails revealed firefighters worked with supervisors to use sick days for vacation time instead of illness. The abuses were discovered during arbitration for a new contract. Commissioner Steve Sisolak, who has called for law enforcement officials to investigate the sick leave abuse, wants firefighters who took the money to pay it back. Ryan Beaman with the local firefighters union says he’ll work to help stop the abuses, and some commissioners want safeguards added to the county’s next contract. The current agreement, which was approved Tuesday, ends June 30th.
