A North Las Vegas teenage mother faces charges of child abuse for the death of her newborn.

Police say the unidentified 16-year-old gave birth to the baby girl in the early morning hours last June at her home near Decatur Boulevard and Lone Mountain Road. Spokesman Tim Bedwell says the baby was born alive but needed medical attention. It wasn’t until the afternoon that the newborn was taken to University Medical Center, where the infant died a short time later. The teenager was arrested and booked this week at the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of child abuse and endangerment, both with substantial bodily harm
