If a new poll is any indication, Senator John Ensign may face a tough re-election battle in 2012. Who are his top rivals? What are the Republican’s chances of holding the seat?
The survey by Public Policy Polling shows Ensign’s job approval rating is only 35 percent, and nearly 60-percent of Nevada voters want him to step aside. The survey also shows Ensign would lose to several potential Democratic challengers, including Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto and Secretary of State Ross Miller. But the poll also has good news for Republicans. Voters say they would choose GOP Congressman Dean Heller over the Democrats if the election were held today. Ensign announced his run for a third term, despite admitting to an affair with the wife of one of his former aides. His handling of the affair has prompted separate investigations. Probes by the Justice Department and the Federal Election Commission have ended, but the Senate Ethics Committee is still investigating Ensign’s actions.
