Facebook is trotting out a new system for sending messages — one that the social network’s founders believe could prove to be the beginning of the end of e-mail as we know it.
The message system works along with Facebook’s Messages section, which is similar to an e-mail inbox. Under the new version, the section will allow you to communicate with Facebook users using cell phone texts, IM chats and e-mails from non-Facebook accounts. All the messages will end up in a single inbox, organized by the person sending them, rather than the type of technology they use. And for those who want one, Facebook will hand out facebook.com e-mail addresses.
