Microsoft is launching what it hopes will be a new, more successful era in smartphones.
New phones running the company’s new software are now available. The phones are designed for both AT&T and T-Mobile USA customers — and will compete with Apple’s iPhone and the growing number of phones with Google’s Android system. The first of the phones with Windows Phone 7 are made by Samsung and HTC. Microsoft’s new phone software features “tiles” on a front screen that give users updates on things like Facebook and e-mail at a glance. Microsoft’s older smartphone software lost traction against its more modern competitors — forcing the company to take another pass at the market with Windows Phone 7.
