President Obama supports India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Speaking to India’s parliament, Obama warned that increased responsibility comes with increased power. India is the world’s largest democracy and has a trillion dollar economy. The UN Security Council is charged with maintaining security and international peace. There are currently only five permanent seats on the UN Security Council: the U.S., China, Britain, France and Russia. Permanent council members have the power to veto council resolutions. In earlier remarks, President Obama called India a key actor on the world stage. Obama is on the first leg of a ten day Asian trek to India, South Korea, Indonesia and Japan.
