Western High Teacher Takes Own Life
Authorities say a teacher at Western High School died as the result of an apparent suicide on campus.
Clark County School Police Lieutenant Ken Young says it happened around 2:30 Monday afternoon in the quad area of the school on Decatur Boulevard near U.S. 95. Young says staffers heard a gunshot and found the 58-year-old teacher dead. The “Review-Journal” says according to school district sources, science teacher Michael Roberts was the victim. One student claimed Roberts, who was hired last year, had “anger management issues.” Freshman Joe Jackson told the newspaper Roberts yelled at his class a few weeks ago because students wouldn’t keep quiet, and the teacher threw a table during the episode. Very few students were on campus because Western and other Clark County schools underwent staff development Monday. Another development day means schools will be closed today as well. When classes resume on Wednesday, grief counselors will be on hand to help staff and students.
