The NFL has issued fines to several players for hits that caused concussions during last Sunday’s games. Steelers linebacker James Harrison, Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather and Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson were all docked. Harrison was fined $75,000, while Meriweather and Robinson both received $50,000 fines. Harrison knocked out Browns receivers Josh Cribbs and Mohamed Massaquoi with a pair of hits, though the one on Cribbs was determined legal. Meriweather hit Ravens tight end Todd Heap, and Robinson knocked out Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson. Robinson, who was also hurt on the play, said he will appeal and that the hit was not illegal, since he led with his shoulder pads and not his helmet. The NFL also announced Tuesday that it will begin to suspend first-time offenders for helmet-to-helmet hits on defenseless receivers.
