UNLV starting wide receiver Phillip Payne has been suspended and did not travel with the team for Saturday’s game at West Virginia, because of a message he posted on Twitter. According to the “Review-Journal,” a source who had access to the message said Payne “tweeted” comments that were critical of UNLV’s new coaching staff, and said the football program was in better condition under former coach Mike Sanford. Sanford was fired last year after five seasons and replaced by new coach Bobby Hauck. In a statement, Hauck said only that Payne was “left home for disciplinary reasons,” but gave no further details. It’s unclear if the suspension will go beyond Saturday’s game. Payne, a junior from Western High School, leads the Rebels with 23 receptions for 389 yards on the season. So far, UNLV is 1-4 in Hauck’s first season and is a 27-point underdog against West Virginia on Saturday.
