Boise State took a huge step forward Monday night in its quest to be taken seriously for national title contention. Kellen Moore’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Austin Pettis with 1:09 remaining in the game provided third-ranked Broncos with a thrilling 33-30 win over No. 10 Virginia Tech in the season-opener at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. It was an incredible night for Pettis. The senior wide receiver blocked a punt and caught a second touchdown pass for the Broncos (1-0), who won their 27th consecutive regular season game and kept alive their quest to earn a spot in this year’s BCS Championship Game. Boise State jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, before the Hokies (0-1) stormed back to take the lead behind the passing and running of quarterback Tyrod Taylor. But it was Moore who came through on the game-winning drive, hitting 4-of-5 passes including the go-ahead score. For the game, Moore completed 23-of-38 passes for 215 yards, while D.J. Harper gained 80 yards on four carries, including a 71-yard TD run.
