Tiger Woods teed off in the first group Thursday morning at The Barclays tournament and finished holding the first-round lead after a six-under 65 at the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey. The Barclays is the first event in the PGA’s FedEx Cup series playoffs. In his first tournament since finalizing his messy divorce from ex-wife Elin Nordegren earlier this week, Woods had seven birdies and a bogey in his morning round. Tiger is still ranked number one in the world, but has yet to win an event on tour this year. He needs to finish inside the top 57 this week to advance to the second playoff event, next weekend’s Deutche Bank Championship in Boston. Vaughn Taylor later matched Woods’ opening round score to grab a share of the lead, while Ryan Palmer and Brian Gay are each one stroke back after posting 66s. Palmer stormed out of the gate with five straight birdies to open his round, and seven birdies in the first eight holes before a double-bogey at the 10th.
