Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Karl Benson is steamed over the decision by member schools Fresno State and Nevada-Reno to bolt the WAC for the Mountain West Conference. Benson calls the schools “selfish” and says he will hold them each to a $5 million buyout clause plus make them wait until 2012 to defect. WAC member Boise State already announced its intentions to move to the Mountain West starting in 2011. The MWC, in turn, is losing Utah and BYU. The Utes are moving to the Pac-10 and BYU will become an independent next year. With the defections of Boise State, Fresno State, and UNR, Benson says the future of the WAC is now in doubt.
