Letterman Blackmailer Nominated For News Emmy
The former CBS producer who tried to blackmail “Late Show” host David Letterman has been nominated for a News and Documentary Emmy award. Robert “Joe” Halderman was one of four producers nominated in the Best Continuing Coverage of a Story by a Newsmagazine category yesterday for a “48 Hours” story last spring called “American Girl, Italian Nightmare.”
It followed the case of Amanda Knox, the exchange student from Washington state convicted in December of murdering her roommate in Italy. The story was the last piece Halderman produced for CBS before he was arrested for threatening to reveal Letterman’s office affairs unless the funnyman paid him two-million dollars. He pled guilty to extortion last March and was sentenced to six months behind bars. Meanwhile, Letterman was passed over for an Emmy nomination for the first time since his show debuted in 1994.
