Study Links Obesity, Decline In Mental Skills
(Washington, DC) — Putting on weight could lead to diminished mental power.
Researchers at Northwestern University have found that extra pounds led to a decline in scores on tests on reasoning, memory and other intellectual skills. Dr. Diana Kerwin said of the post-menopausal women she studied, quote, “what we found is that actually obesity in and of itself is an independent risk factor for declining cognitive performance.” Although the scores of test subjects who had gained weight were in the normal range, Kerwin said “the added weight definitely had a detrimental effect.” She called extra weight an independent risk factor for brain health. The study is published in the “Journal of the American Geriatric Society.”
